Whitney Houston died and I’m totally unaffected because I’m a young white male. What is affecting me is how many people are terribly unfunny.
Frankly, I don’t mind my Facebook / Twitter / Tumblz feeds blowing up when someone dies or something huge cultural event happens. It’s exciting when people die. That’s fine.
What irks me is how many people suddenly loath Whitney Houston. “Crack rocks in heaven”, “crack-whore”, “bitch”, etc. When Michael Jackson died, I understood some of the backlash- he had all those pedophilia charges and that is some inexcusable shit. But who gives a shit if Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston did heroin and crack? They didn’t hurt anyone except themselves. They probably had a great time and were awesome to party with.
I think it stems from a mixture of fame-related jealousy and latent misogyny. And don’t get me wrong, I love jokes about dead people. Just make a joke.
